Revenue recoups €29m from tax defaulters

The Revenue Commissioners made 88 tax settlements during the final three months of 2009, new figures out today have shown.
Revenue today published its quarterly tax defaulters list, which showed that the 88 cases it settled during the last quarter of 2009 netted the Exchequer nearly €29m.
Of the 88 cases published today, seven saw settlements made of over €1m, with 14 cases exceeding the €500,000 mark and 44 cases above the €100,000 mark.
Notable settlements
Notable amongst the list of tax defaulters was racehorse trainer John Mulhern from Co Kildare, who made a settlement of €1.4m with Revenue for underdeclaration of income tax and capital gains.
Meanwhile, Central Park night club in Galway made a settlement to the tune of €3.6m for underdeclaration of VAT and PRSI
Construction company GAMA Construction made a settlement of €2m for underdeclaration of corporation tax, VAT, PRSI/PAYE and relevant contracts tax.
Monaghan company director Robert McChesney also settled a sum of €3.6m with Revenue for underdeclaration of income and capital gains tax.
Revenue also noted that the list of settlements published today reflect only a portion of the money it had recouped from all settlements and investigations in the last quarter of 2009. In total during the October to December period Revenue raked back €119.5m for the Exchequer.
