In 2009, he said The Stone Roses would never get back together, but front man Ian Brown joined the other three members of the iconic Mancunian band this afternoon to announce a comeback tour kicking off with two gigs in Manchester next June.

At a press conference in London, the band – which also includes John Squire, Gary Mountfield, aka Mani, and Alan Wren, aka Reni - said they will play two concerts in Manchester’s Heaton Park on 29 and 30 June, followed by a world tour.

The band also said it will be playing new songs on the tour.

In response to how long the tour will go on, Brown said: "We'll ride until the wheels fall off".

Tickets for the Manchester gigs go on sale this Friday at 9am. More details from The Stone Roses website.

The last time The Stone Roses appeared, minus Reni and Squire, was in August 1996 at the Reading Festival.
