Rock bank Queen will be honoured with the Global Icon Award at the 2011 MTV EMA, MTV announced today.

The band, which was formed in 1971, will also take the stage at the 2011 MTV EMA for a special performance.

Over the last 40 years, Queen has sold more than 300m albums, had 16 No 1 albums, 18 No 1 singles and the UK’s top-selling album of all time (the band’s Greatest Hits compilation has sold 5.7m copies).

The 2011 MTV EMA takes place in Belfast on Sunday 6 November, 18 days before the 20th anniversary of the death of Queen’s iconic frontman, Freddie Mercury.

"We are honoured to be designated a Global Icon,” said Queen guitarist Brian May.  “We will do our best to be worthy!"

“Over the past four decades, Queen has made an indelible impact on the pop music landscape,” said Bruce Gillmer, EVP of talent and music programming/events for Viacom International Media Networks. “They are passionately revered by generations of fans and musicians across the globe.

“We are absolutely thrilled that they will be joining us at this year’s MTV EMA, and we look forward to a very special performance.”
